Chapter 10 – Source

The next two places stonewalled me, citing the ongoing police investigation and insurance investigation The final place flat out refused to speak to me, saying that first 'my kind' had robbed them, and now wouldn't stop pressuring them for information. Adding that they told them the next time they showed up at their business they would call the police, and yet there I was.

I politely said to them, “Umm... I'm, uh, not with them. Sorry, I'll leave.” Run away, run away!

After rejoining Cliff, I checked the time because night was falling. It always felt weird that sunset was around four in the afternoon in December. I still had just enough time to head to Laun Tower to meet with the one person who might shed some light on a couple of things for me.

I noted we hadn't pulled away from the curb yet, instead, Cliff was just craning his neck to the sky through the windshield. I was about to ask what was up when I was reminded about one of the few gifts of my newfound Elfdom and the absolute favorite thing I have experienced since being Elfed. The sun sank below the horizon and sheets of dazzling and mesmerizing fire rolled across the sky.

Tana had brought me to the roof of Laun Tower to show me how Elves, with our more sensitive eyesight, experienced sunset. She says it was her first experience when she had manifested her Elvish physiology for the first time. And it is her favorite thing too, and the wistful smile on her face, while she shared the experience with me, was spectacular as well.

Once the light show was over and the world around us dimmed slightly, most colors washed out a little as our night vision adjusted. Sometimes it is hard for me to tell the difference between night and day now if there is any light source around, and it's that muting of the colors that let me know. And now I know why mom has always slept with a sleep mask on. She says that even with her repressing her elvish traits, things are still a little loud and bright for her.

That thought made my brow furrow. Mom didn't have to hide anymore, now that us Riicathi are out. I wonder why she hasn't just let her Elf side out. I've only seen it once, on the night I Elfed, and unlike all other Elves, the Riicathi can repress or exert their physical Elf traits at will. All other Elves can only repress their elvish side by triggering a Protoelastin enzyme dump into their system, but it takes around a month to burn out of their system as more enzyme is built up and stored. It is how they stayed hidden among Sapiens all these eons.

The Riicathi can regulate how much of the enzyme runs through our bodies, which is why mom was able to change twice in front of me in one night. I needed to learn how to do that, it would make my life easier in a lot of ways.
